Surviving the first week of holidaze

Surviving the first week of holidaze
one Conditions were perfect. My mom wasn’t at home. I’m inside a room. And what did I do?
I did a cover of Franz Ferdinand’s No You Girls. Covered every instrument but there’s no vocals in this one because..I can’t sing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AUf7G-DdzY
two I invited Moses over to my house.
three I was claying around.
four OVERDUE! I was supposed to write a post about the Band Party we had on the 29th of May, but there was no way I could upload the photos.
Anyway, I finally got the pictures uploaded last night but it’s in Facebook. Click here if you want to have a look at ‘em. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=111970&id=592014972&l=f231e158b3
Long story short, the band party was held at Steffi’s house + neighbourhood. At the very same time, there was a Green House party elsewhere (haha green house effect). I had two choices and obviously, I picked the Band Party, because the band is forever “the best” ;)
What, I’m proud to be a band geek! :D
Those who didn’t attend (for whatever reason) have absolutely missed the fun we had lah. The party was a good opportunity to bond with the other BANDitos, since we had some group activities/games. We played this Amazing Race sort of game, running back and forth from the house to the playground..pretty much like testing our own endurance.
One last statement: If we’re talking about team/society parties, I’d rather go for band parties anytime. Right right right? ;)

..did I ever mention that I have a thing for building IKEA stuff?

three I was claying around. For the sake of my Art project.

And take a look at my right thumb. Le hitchhiker’s thumb :D

four I think that it’s going to be a great year, in terms of games and such. With the Sims 3 released and the soon-to-be-released Tales of Monkey Island and BEATLES ROCKBAND, I wonder how I am going to set my mind onto SPM..

A 3D John Lennon is pretty good-looking HAHA. Ok lah, I definitely can’t get this one since it’s ROCKBAND. A whole set. No way.

Sports Day ‘09

From a trombonist’s eye-view

No more Atten-Hut.
No more Parade Rest.
No more Left-Face-Left/Right-Face-Right.
No more Mark Time March/Forward March.
No more Parade Dismiss.

The school band is a club/society and Green House is a [sports] team, but it seems that I have a lot of spirit for the band rather than the latter. I just don’t know why. Maybe, to me, making music with others is better than engaging in sporty stuff. I’m extremely pathetic in running and all that.

I think…if the school band did not exist, I might have been in Green’s marchpast team.

Yellow House was the champion again (for how many consecutive years already?); Followed by Red, Blue and Green. I contributed only one point to Green House and not to forget, a whole lot of sweat to the prop-painting for the Green House marchpast team.

Before the final results was announced, I was telling myself that I’d be frustrated if Green House is only less than 5 points away from Blue House.

…It turned out to be right. We were 4 points behind Blue. At times like this, you’d feel that every point counts.

I’m just glad that all of the paintings we’d done did not go to waste :D Yep, Green’s marchpast team grabbed the gold!

##Using an 18-200mm camera lens as an utility:##
“Eh, that fella running there..Green or blue?”
“Cannot see.”
“Oh wait wait wait, I use my camera.”
*zooms*
“Blue.”

PhotoSpam time. But before that..

–Post-Sports Day–
Things we [as in the band] did after Sports Day ended:
1. We “marched” to Pizza Hut.
“Fall in!”
“WOI CHECK YOUR LINE LAH!”
“Eh, wrong leg!”
“Parade, go to Pizza Hut!”

Yeah, it’s sort of a band joke/inside joke, which is cool.

2. We continued using band commands while we were in Pizza Hut.
“Atten-Hut!” *holds up a knife and a fork*
“Roll-roll-roll, down! Roll-roll-roll, eat!”

3. We took photos!

Sports Rehearsal

Posted in Fotographie, School band madness by M! on April 23, 2009

It’s not as important as the upcoming Annual Sports Day. But well wells. It wasn’t so bad, despite the absence of my close friends. I can survive with the school band people. In fact, the band’s been pretty fun, lately. Except for the part where I have to tolerate the juniors’ lame jokes. Man, I AM growing old.

Lots of candid photos ahead.

Zi Hao, who appeared out of nowhere, came to join us, took out his phone and said, “My phone can be used for Truth or Dare..can spin quite long one..”

And that’s when the game started.

Truth – Question: “If you were to be with the last person on earth, who would it be?”
Took me >5 mins to answer that because there were so many busybodies (not shown).
Look at how uneasy I was feeling. Hahah..

Bandlord Lim laughs!

Christabel the alto saxophonist! Also, she’s a D90 user.
It so happened that she brought it today and I got to play around with it for a while. The continuous shooting (not shutter speed) is..super fast. Greater than D40’s.

Dare: Hoev Quan had to hug Pei Xi

Dare: Zi Hao had to sing a love song to Pn. Deva
Brave guy, I tell ye. There was once where he had to say “I love you” to a random girl.

Dare: Wei-Jun had to hug Melissa (I don’t think they know each other)
Free Hugs Day, eh?

Dare: Hoev Quan had to kiss Ellison’s hand

Dare: Ming Ying had to shout “I LOVE YOU!” to no one in particular.

Dare: Zi Hao had to kiss Mr Lim’s hand.
“Which hand you want? Left or right?” – Mr Lim

The last dare: Si Min (in green) had to say “You’re very good-looking” to a random boy.
Look how puzzled and lost he is! HAHAHA.
He shook his head afterwards.

The game was brought to an end and I was left with nothing to do. I got to borrow Christabel’s macro lens and snapped some photos using manual focus [it can't auto focus on my D40 apparently], with the f-stop remaining at 1.8. I think the time has come for me to make use of the Shutter Priority (S) mode, heh

Gads, Zi Hao was the only one who was willing to pose

Middle Schools Band Festival ‘09

Posted in Events/celebrations, School band madness by M! on February 8, 2009

Yesterday, some of us school band members participated in the Middle Schools Band Festival ‘09 at The International School of Kuala Lumpur. It was my last time, along with the other Form Fives :(

The last time the band members of Sri KL participated in this was back in 2007. There’s a post on it right hereDidn’t attend last year’s because nobody in our school received the sheet music. You can’t go for the band festival without sheet music, ya know…

Just so you know, this Band Festival thingo is basically like a free workshop. We are divided into the junior and advanced group. While the advanced group practice in some classrooms under an instructor, the junior group will remain in the auditorium and they will practice there. We switch locations after our break(s). After hours of practice, we perform! :D This year we have a new addition though. Besides just being a band festival, a choir group performed too. (It’s nothing compared to our school’s “Choir” club okay! The pros have four lines – Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone. And how about Sri KL’s “Choir” club? Aiyah, as Calvin puts it: “I wouldn’t even call it a choir”, which is pretty much true because they’re all girls and they all seem to be altos ONLY. Where’s the darn variety?)

So anyway, I’m in the advanced/blue group, along with Siew Yee [trumpet], Heng Hau [trumpet], and Calvin [clarinet]. I was in the trombone section, and it so happened that I was the only one with a bass trombone. Oh, how I used to find the “uncommon” instruments so amusing…such as the bass clarinet and baritone sax. Didn’t spot any tall bassoons or coiling sousaphones this year.

A few flautists and a staff euphoniumist played Henry Mancini’s Baby Elephant Walk as an opening for the ceremony. Ivan, my trombone senior who is now studying in college, helped me to record a few of the performances. He didn’t manage to record the opening and the choir one, although I must point out that the choir group were so cool that when they left the stage row by row, they continued singing ’til even when they were already outside the auditorium. It’s a “Wahliaoeh!” factor. The junior group played Tribal Dance, Train Heading West and March of the Ladybugs. The advanced group played Barnum and Bailey’s Favourite, Portrait of a Clown, and Celebration For Winds and Percussions. Here are the videos:

Recapitulation

Posted in Events/celebrations, School band madness, School-related by M! on June 6, 2008

My computer finally came home a few days ago. Some of the things which I needed to say:

one
Sports Day ‘08 was over last month. The School Band had a new uniform (and I did NOT choose the colour). When it comes to sports, I’m very inactive. This year, I’m active in a different sense. I got to design the Green House T-Shirt, draw/paint the flags and banners, and helped out with the making of the crocodile head (though I do not have a picture of it, strangely)

Nothing athletic after all, eh?

The original drawing of the T-Shirt can be found here – *THERE ARE DESIGN AND COLOUR DIFFERENCES!*

Also, the original drawing of the crocodile which appears at the back of the T-shirt can be found here – *THERE ARE COLOUR DIFFERENCES TOO!*

Band videos taken by Sucelia, below (sorry for the ultra-shaky moments!):
Bengawan Solo

(the intro’s missing..)

YMCA

two
Teacher’s Day ‘08 was also over last month. I performed Tie A Yellow Ribbon ‘Round The Ole Oak Tree on the electric guitar with Steffi (vocals), Edward (piano) and Alastair (drums). With my recent bad haircut, black turtleneck sweater and black pants, I received weird comments from my friends:

“Wah, really like the Beatles”
“John Lennon!” (quite agreeable, frankly)
“You looked like one of those guys in the Click Five”

I could’ve given this expression:

YA RLY. I’m not gonna post the video here. It’s up to you whether to search for it or not. :P

three
I got this rather random yet funny game for the Wii, entitled Wario Ware: Smooth Moves. The player has to do some stances and with that, they have to complete a minigame shown on the screen withing 3-5 seconds (unless it’s the boss stage). So far, the funniest one I’ve encountered is this:

It gets harder and funnier each time. If you fail to follow the dance, this is what happens:

It’s a highly recommended game for Wii owners. Especially when you have friends watching you.

four
I’m planning to take up the double bass (a.k.a. acoustic bass, contrabass).

I like it for its deep sound. I don’t care if I’m short, there’s always a stool which I can stand on..*laughs* The only problem is it’s very rare here and so are the teachers. There isn’t any which is living near my place. Most of the teachers’ places are waaaaay out of town. Could be an hour ride in the car. They say that people are willing to hire you in the orchestra due to the rarity of players.

five
My Thai grandfather passed away peacefully (when he was with his friends) back in April. You know the sad thing? He had always wanted to see my younger brother…

…but he never got the chance.

I must say, although I can’t talk to my Thai grandparents, I bet that they’re much nicer than my local grandparents (they’re racists). Days after my grandfather’s death, my mom and I found out something terrible outside our house, at four in the morning (and ’twas the day she had to leave for Thailand to pay final respect)

It’s a major family issue. It’s not another person’s death. It makes you want to say “Why?” if you were there.

Search for all the underlined letters in this entry. Put it together. You might know what it is.

Paparazzism, minus celebrityhood

Posted in School band madness by M! on December 29, 2007

With a few days left ’til 2008 arrives, how did I spend my last few 2007 days?

Anna, Ivan, Jonathan and Pei Xi
Don’t you think that they look like they’re singing while reading lyrics?

As a band member, I had to attend the annual Orientation Day for the Form Ones and New Students, sometimes known as the newbies. I’ve been doing the “instruments introduction” for two years and I hesitantly did it again for the first batch of tourists that entered.

Now, let this be an entry full of candid photos and captions, rather than just long sentences. The photos are taken with my trusty Nikon D40. Note that I did not take all of the photos.

Furniture movers, setting up things

I’m the one who’s responsible for almost all of the words there.
“Willkommen zum Bandraum”..Ja, that is German, you see?

Jon rocking out on the drums with a mean look upon his face

That’s me with the saxophone, Edward with the trumpet and Ivan with the trombone.
I’m temporarily playing it after many many months since I switched to the trombone section.

Just look at Steffi, the one with the colourful musical tie and white-framed glasses.

Now, look at Ivan. I really don’t know what to say about his pose.

Siew Yee, Pei Xi and I

Alastair, Jon, Ed and Ivan

All of us, performing Jingle Bells

Ivan poses again. He’s got style, no? C’mon, laugh with me :D

Er, yes, floopy bangs. That was the lousiest piano one could lay their hand on, ever. It’s been there since..somewhere early this year?

Exhaustion and out of breath..Strangely, I look a little bit chubbier.

Jon and Al of the percussion section
Isn’t that boy in yellow just cute? He’s not a member of our society, though.

Jon attempts to lift the drum set, I mean look..the toms are already fixed onto the bass drum! He claimed that he was trying to get more packs.

A quote from Mr. Lim, while some of us were cleaning up the band room:
“Oi, I’m not your maid lah!”

Too soon

There are times when one is feeling down…

Exactly what I’m experiencing right now.

The school days for the Form Threes have ended today, which is much earlier than the other forms. The bad news is that I was involved with the band meetings I had today and before and I knew that I could’ve spent more time with others…I feel guilty myself.

To make things even worse for me, 3 Beta is currently having a class party (yes, right at this moment when I’m typing this out) AND I’m not even able to attend it due to my piano class, which is quite difficult to get a replacement class if I even try to skip one. I hardly say “No” to any class gatherings, but this time, I had to say it, and how I feel so sad that I wouldn’t be able to have fun with the best class I’ve been to…for the last time.

I admit: It is pretty much a bittersweet ending for my Form Three life, though, I was not the only person to miss all that fun (my best friend, Elena, was one of them)

My best friends, Elena and Sucelia

There are very few good moments of today. I was too glad to see someone back in school again (his absence was quite long), and I guess the next time I’ll see him is next year, unless I’m lucky. Perhaps it is time for me to start speaking up, eh?

Boys will be boys..with Alan against the wall, I assume that he’s being interrogated by Chong Yee and Chen Ji

Well, now I can conclude that my school life for 2007 is the best compared to the previous years.

I’ll just have my say on two new folks who came from another school and joined us this year in 3 Beta..

Farisha, the mad gamer
Do not let her shaggy hair deceive you..she may be a silent one, but she drawing skills are great. She does very good sketches of human figures (or sometimes robots). And I warn you not to be fooled again, because Farisha is, seriously, a hardcore gamer. This girl knows/plays more computer games than guys do and it seems that she is the only person I know who owns a Playstation 3. She has also told me that her dad plays games as much as she does (or probably more). Which reminds me..3 Beta 2007 is probably the class which had the most amount of female gamers. If we include the boys, that’s like half the class. Another cool part of Farisha is that she plays the drums and guitar, but I haven’t heard her playing any of ‘em yet. The funny thing is that some has said that she has the same personality as me. I could agree on that..

Chong Yee, the Malaccan fellow
He’s also known as “acorn head” due to the..well..shape of his head. I think he’s a very strange guy, in a good sense of course. Chong Yee has a permanent calm look upon his face and he is capable of bringing both his legs to the back of his neck. I doubt that he takes yoga classes. Wilson once brought up an interesting theory on how Chong Yee could do such things:

“It’s because ah…every night, he smells his feet!”

Did you know that his brothers and cousins sometimes visit 3 Beta as if it was a family gathering?

Here’s some of my last-minute photos taken on the last few weeks of school. I couldn’t get to capture much as I attended some band meetings..unfortunately.

Indeed, I built this. I make one every year, so it’s kind of like my personal tradition. Note that there are a few missing cards which I removed and it managed to stay strong until I tried to removed the card in the centre, as shown above..

Yes, short hair, I know…

Until the next time an update comes..

Farewell, 3 Beta!

..but not to all of you..

Now, I know I’m not supposed to be updating this page, but I have the urge to post 2 new school band videos. Yes, they’re much clearer than what I posted back in April. These are our performances for the people from Nukata Junior High School:

Sock Hop Tonight! (again)
Wasn’t playing the trombone in this song because I decided to have a bass “cameo”

Fire Dance *new!*

Save your Nikes

This is one of the most important days in any year when you’re schooling in Sri Kuala Lumpur Secondary School. Before I continue, credits shall go to Jessica for helping me taking the pictures and videos! Warning, there’s quite a number of pictures + two videos.

I arrived school early, with Zhoe June and Steffi. We [the band members] were supposed to get the first bus, but in the end, due to some late-comers, we were the last batch to leave school. Sad, isn’t it?

Once we reached the Matsushita Stadium, we unpacked our instruments quickly and got ourselves in position. Yes, the school band lead all the other marchpast members. Our ex-band members, Wendy, James and Boon Hua happened to be there.

The band marches! 1
“The fallen are the virtuous among us..”

Behind us were the prefects, scouts, blue house marchpast (house is also known as team), red house marchpast, yellow house marchpast and lastly the green house marchpast (I’m in green house).

The band marches! 8
“..walk among us, never judge us to be blessed.”

It rained on the night before. Fortunately the day wasn’t very hot in the morning, but unfortunately the field was a sticky and muddy one. The band looked like it was splitted into half as the area between us was muddy. We were marching continuously, and it probably lasted for about 20 minutes or so. Oh, the four houses were taking their sweet time to show their marching stunts and all that jazz, especially red house..but all these marching for the houses are part of the competition.

Once all the prefects, scouts and houses left the track, it’s the school band’s turn to perform two songs: Eye Of The Tiger (as mentioned in the previous entry) and Sock Hop Tonight! (a medley consisting of “At The Hop”, “Venus” and “Rock Around The Clock”; we cut off “Love Me Tender”)

To be frank, we received the scores/notation for Sock Hop Tonight back in 2005, but we have never performed it. Today’s our lucky day to perform it. Our conductor for today was James Ting, who was our ex-drum major and ex-conductor. This medley has got some multi-tasking for us to do. Yeah that’s right, we’ve got movements! In the first part of the medley, it featured the saxophones. In the second part, there was a trumpet solo. Lastly, my favourite part of the medley, was a trombone and euphonium special. I don’t have any explanations for Eye Of The Tiger. Watch the following videos, if you must! And try spotting me, I’m the smallest trombonist you could find in the videos, and I am far right. I don’t appear very often..

Sock Hop Tonight! (though we played it in the morning)

..and here are two pictures which I was tempted to scribble on:

Right. After all that marching, there was a cheerleading performance by the school’s team, Cyrens. I did not bother to watch it. Yeah honestly, it does not amuse me much. I shall not put up any cheerleading photos here (though my friend used the camera to take quite a number of it, it’s safe with me) After the Cyrens’ performance, the running events were held for some time. And again, there was the interhouse-cheerleading competition. Only Green House was able to amuse me. The teachers’ telematch was the best and it’s funny to see how your teachers walk/run/struggle in a 3-legged-race. Lastly there was the Tug-Of-War. Probably one of my favourite events to cheer for.

(Oh, there’s no pictures left for me to post because my camera’s battery ran out in the middle of the day)

At the end of the day, the results were in. Blue house were the champions, followed by Yellow, Red and *sigh* Green. This is the third time Green fell in the last place (counted since my first year in secondary school)

The Blues go “Let’s go, blue house!” and my reply would be “Go where?!”

Oh well. All this loss doesn’t matter to me..“don’t frown, green has the crown.”

Somewhere.

Don’t expect anymore entries; I’m pausing my computer/laptop usage for good. Will be back in..say..at the end of next month? May you all have a pleasant time!

Majorly about band, eh?

Hey, it’s Mr Ng!

Two recent happenings:
1. My dad got a free iPod Shuffle (1GB storage, silver, 2nd generation) from his company, or something. He gave it to me. Yaaah!

2. I found 3 old classmates who I have not met in 9/10 years in MySpace.com. They are Mao Motohashi, Mitsuyo Iwasawa and Eugene Talmadge. They can remember me, thankfully! We’re really far apart, because they’re still studying in Yokohama International School, Japan. Hope to visit them some other time. Ah the good times..

Anyway, Sports Day is on this coming Saturday. Yesterday we had our Sports Rehearsal in Matsushita Stadium. We are playing the usual same old songs: Hot Shot!, Wawasan 2020 (some patriotic tune), Eye Of The Tiger + A medley we have never performed before..I’ll let you know about the title some other day, alright?

I find the lower brass section very interesting, goofy and fun. If Wei-Jun, Ivan and Edward Wong weren’t in the band, I’d think that this lower brass section wouldn’t be very fun. Speaking of fun people, Edward Wong is a new euphonium player (he used to play the euphonium in his old school)

One time, he sat by the drum set. Then there was a non-member who entered the band room. Edward says, “Welcome home!” Edward, who is a Form 1 student, enjoys dancing with his euphonium. I should record this next time. In my opinion, he is the funniest band member of 2007.

We have the worst bass drummers this year. Terry and Kughan of Form 3 can’t keep their tempo right throughout a session of marching practice. They need to be reminded to slow down when they’re beating their bass drums. Other than that, they could irritate the heck out of anyone. Terry can’t do anything good in band, and Kughan dropped my bass guitar the other day. I think the band needs to avoid taking in fools like them..*sigh*

Ivan is no longer a shy-guy. He carries out his duties in band well enough, but of course, as a band president, he shouldn’t fool around much. He can shout and raise his voice, see. His shyness returns when some guys make fun of him for liking a female ex-band member. Next year will be his final year as the band president. All the best to him.

Here are the photos taken on today’s holiday practice, credits goes to Steffi for helping me taking 6 out of 7 photos today!
